Unfortunately I am now showing signs of the symptoms. Hoping it's just a bad cold that wont go away. However, confined to my bed all day today.

It's really hard to concentrate, so writing anything meaningful is out of the question.

I've contented myself with a couple of descriptive sentences about a few characters. I'm too exhausted to type anymore, so this is a short one for today.

Stay safe everyone.
Yesterday was day 13 for my other half. We were out of key supplies and I could not get a delivery from any supermarket. I had been trying all week as I watched my medicine cupboard empty of all paracetamol and cold cures and my fridge empty of everything except the milk my husband could no longer drink.

I had no choice but to go out myself. I was feeling fine, a little trouble breathing, but otherwise fine.

I walked to my local supermarket - my phone app tells me it was about 2000 steps to get there, so not far.

To my surprise there was no queue to get in and the shelves were absolutely full - except the pasta aisle. Bread, eggs, chicken, veg and fruit. The dates were not long but there was plenty.
I soon filled my basket and suddenly had no strength to even lift it. Just like that - pouffe and I was weak as a kitten.

I got straight to a till and began slowly unloading my precious cargo. Within seconds I was dizzy, unable to focus and shaking. I got so hot. I was on the point of fainting. A combination of sudden exercise, not eating and lifting a heavy weight a reasonable distance was too much for my lungs and body to cope with. Note to self - if I have to go outside, take a mars bar and a bottle of water.

The staff were superb. They got me a sugary snack and something to drink. A gowned-up first-aider checked my pulse and - at a distance - observed me for 5 mins, checking I was OK

Once I was recovered I was able to pay for my groceries - all neatly packed in my back pack by the checkout staff - and make my way the 2000 steps back. I was home 90 minutes after I'd left the house.

I was wiped for the whole day. But I did get the medicine and food I desperately needed.

Last night my husband actually asked for food. - shepherd's pie. First time in nearly 2 weeks he wanted something. First time in a week I had the ingredients and could actually make him something he wanted to eat.

I am hoping that's the corner turned for him.

Today I woke at 4.55 am. I am in the back bedroom and it doesn't have black-out curtains, so when the sun rises, so do I! The good thing about it today was I was able to get onto a supermarket website and place the long-awaited on-line order. The first time I've been able to do that since this all began. I have had a basket of shopping suspended in the ether for five days. That alone had been a step forward - actually being able to build a basket. Previously as there were no delivery slots, there was no access even to that. I am hoping my vulnerable person registration went through and that's why a slot came up. I cant possibly go to a supermarket again. I am not strong enough.

So, now I am hoping that the delivery goes ahead on Tuesday.

Needless to say I didn't get any writing done yesterday. Today I am back to working at home (I was actually on annual leave last week!). The plan is to set aside an hour after work. I will let you know how it goes.
I believe he is a little better - the gaps between debilitating bouts of coughing seem longer. Today I am exhausted. Just having a shower and getting dressed wiped me out. I can almost hear my mind issuing instructions to my limbs to move. My chest hurts. It seems that at some point in the night a person or persons unknown put a tonne weight on my chest and then took a file to my throat. That's what it feels like anyway. Hope its just a cold and stress and not the virus.

On the plus side, I found some hidden paracetamol. Yippee!

Still no luck getting any shopping organised. I'm not on the right lists apparently. That or the supermarkets are still waiting for the government list (I am registered as vulnerable to Covid-19) - pick whichever excuse you like from the call-centre list.

I did manage to get a visit from a fully gowned up district nurse yesterday. Luckily my blood tests are improving. The poor nurse had to strip off her protective clothing on my front lawn and stuff it into a sealed bag, leaving it there with the instruction that I was to double-bag it, leave it for 72 hours and then throw it away. Scary, but necessary precautions in these times.

Now I am at the keyboard and waiting for inspiration. I will try to write a new chapter for Mergers and Acquisitions and if that proves beyond me I will edit Legacy - book 2 in my historical fiction trilogy.

Keep safe everyone.Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-86266672036904476322020-03-27T01:15:00.000-07:002020-03-27T01:15:59.296-07:00Coronavirus - stay home (and write)<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Hi everyone.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It's been a very long time.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
With the coronavirus – Covid-19 – outbreak, here in UK we are confined to our homes. For the past 10 days I have been unable to leave my home, but luckily, apart from the symptoms of a severe cold and cough, I have been keeping well. My family is scattered across the UK, but all seem fit and well with the notable exception of my husband.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He has the virus (although we are not testing in UK so I cant say with medical certainty). I have never seen him this ill, not even when as an adult he got chicken pox. He has been ill for 11 days. His temperature spikes over 38.4 and the pain is unmanageable. He constantly coughs and that wreaks havoc on his headaches. I’m a huge Terry Goodkind fan and read the Sword of Truth novels with a passion (obsessively some might say!). In those stories the hero, Richard, suffers from headaches so severe they will kill him. Terry’s description of how they affect his character could have been written from life – the life of my husband. It’s terrifying.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
All I can do is provide drinks, a little food and pain relief. I cant hug him or stroke his face. Not because I’m heartless but because I am in a high risk category. I suffer with a blood-clotting problem and have had clots on my lungs and this is a respiratory virus. I daren’t do anything that means I may get it.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
What am I doing to keep sane? I decided to go back to my writing, which had been on pause whilst I settled into a new job and recovered from major surgery. I promised myself I’d write at least a few words everyday. I did that through January. Then the virus began to take hold around the globe and things began to change.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
So, today, 10 days into my house confinement I have picked up my lap top, cleared a work space and begun writing again.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
As you may recall, I tend to write multiple projects at the same time. Not sure why, but that’s me! The work I picked up this morning was “Mergers and Acquisitions” a sci-fi novel I began several years ago and have never really been happy with. The characters seemed unreal to me and the scenario flipped from trite to too far-fetched (is that even possible for sci-fi?). The theme? How a hidden cabal of corporate interests cashes-in on a word-wide pandemic to take control of our planet. Now, I can re-write portions of that with real life experience. Not what I would have wanted by a long way, but, writers should write from experience as well as imagination.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In between sneezes, coughing and aching limbs I will set my self the task of completing and publishing this short novel. I will let you know when its available.

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #303030; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 16px; margin-bottom: 24px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Stay well. stay safe, and stay indoors.

In that time I have continued to write but not as frequently as I wanted. Now I have taken the plunge and changed jobs, after 28 years with my previous employer! It's been a bit of an upheaval all round, but I work a 4 day week in my new job to free up time for writing. I have just been given a new laptop by my husband - one that actually works! - and now I'm hitting the keyboard with renewed zeal.

1000 words this evening and two new outlines for short stories. Finally the old me is back.
You know the drill! Then I came across a review of Loyalty on the US Amazon site. "Could not put it down" they wrote. Wow! It is so wonderful to know someone enjoyed my work. I'm still smiling. Better still, I have several paragraphs of Legacy completed.
From now on I'm going to make sure I review the books I read, hopefully I'll make a struggling Author smile 😀Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-91631651903250865452016-06-16T15:01:00.001-07:002016-06-16T15:01:43.123-07:00Quotations<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
Ocassionaly I find a quote that resonates with me. I was staying in Bloomsbury recently and the following came to mind:

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
Virginia Woolf

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
Women have burnt like beacons in all the works of all the poets from the beginning of time. Indeed if woman had no existence save in the fiction written by men, one would imagine her a person of the utmost importance; very various; heroic and mean; splendid and sordid; beautiful and hideous in the extreme; as great as a man, some would say greater. But this is woman in fiction. In fact, as Professor Trevelyan points out, she was locked up, beaten and flung about the room. A very queer, composite being thus emerges. Imaginatively she is of the highest importance; practically she is completely insignificant. She pervades poetry from cover to cover; she is all but absent from history. She dominates the lives of kings and conquerors in fiction; in fact she was the slave of any boy whose parents forced a ring upon her finger. Some of the most inspired words and profound thoughts in literature fall from her lips; in real life she could hardly read; scarcely spell; and was the property of her husband.

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
She also wrote:

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px; margin-bottom: 24px;">
A woman needs money and a room if her own if she is to write fiction

<div style="color: #3d596d; font-family: Merriweather, Georgia, "Times New Roman", Times, serif; font-size: 15px; line-height: 25.5px;">
I try to write about the 'real' women. I'm still working on the money and the room!

Legacy is beginning to shape up but I'm still struggling to get the 'feel' of it right. In my head it's there but when I read it out loud, I'm not convinced. The woes of being a writer eh?
I tried putting it aside and focussing on two other projects. First my novel about women transported to the American colonies in 1730s - Maryland. I asked for comments from my writers group. Best thing I could have done. I got a whole new perspective and I think I know how to get this going again. So, thanks to Ron, Eden and Karen.
My sci-fi story also got a dusting off. A big decision has been made. It's going to be two short stories, unless if course, I change my mind. Again!
Today I'm finalising the torture scenes in Legacy. Just got to go practice on the Sunday chicken before it goes in the oven.....Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-72090811028783992332016-05-07T23:30:00.000-07:002016-05-07T23:30:49.902-07:00The Muse descendedAfter struggling for several weeks to find both the time and the inspiration to continue with my two main works in progress, this past few days I haven't stopped! Every spare minute I've been typing or scribbling notes.
Why did this happen? I was welcomed into a writer's circle and my new friends offered honest and thoughtful critiques of my work. A whole new perspective and a revelation on how to improve my work. It's reinvigorated my desire to write.
So, what did I write this week?
I have added to my sci-fi novel, Mergers and Acquisitions, and more importantly I've added 5000 words to Legacy.
This week I'm concentrating on a torture scene. Put myself off my tea!
Can't wait to finish today's chores so I can get writing. And I've booked tomorrow off work.....Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-56629645581345265432016-04-09T10:31:00.000-07:002016-04-09T10:31:39.130-07:00*Distractions abound*Having got back into writing more of Legacy, book 2 in my trilogy following the life and times of the Tregarthin, Wadham and Wyndham families, I was distracted again!
This time there were two culprits: an on-line learning course and a trip to Cornwall.
First the on-line course. This is a FutureLearn course run by the University of Basle on Reading in the digital age. Fascinating academic analysis of modern reading theories. Very engaging, but it's like having a new baby: you find a whole afternoon has gone by with you just looking (in this case looking at words on a page and on a screen and attempting to determine a difference in meaning/understanding).
Second, the trip. A much needed trip to Cornwall. It's cold and windy, ideal for blowing away the cobwebs. But, and there always seems to be a but, I went to Little Dennis in Falmouth, an outpost of Pendennis castle. It's a fantastic little spot but very evocative. I've now got the outline of at least two new stories in my head - getting the notebook out once I finish this - and I've sketched out a few chapters for book 3. Great. But I haven't finished book 2 yet!!!!
Fingers crossed for writing time tonight...Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-8023944558520709272016-03-31T09:36:00.000-07:002016-03-31T09:37:36.791-07:00Finally, back to writingToday I finally managed to find an hour to revisit my draft of Legacy, the sequel to Loyalty. I was pleased with the changes I've made to the first seven chapters, but I did have to sacrifice a few paragraphs that I had been very proud of before. I strongly suspect I will reuse the phrasing elsewhere!
Life gets so busy these days that finding time to write becomes difficult. With the lighter evenings I'm hoping that I can find time to push on with Legacy, as I won't be so tempted to wrap up in thick blankets and snuggle down as I did on those dark winter evenings!

Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-58798657470386219402016-03-13T09:51:00.001-07:002016-03-13T09:51:42.374-07:00Inspiration in unexpected quartersWent out as planned but unexpectedly came across a tiny fourteenth century manor house. Only a few rooms remain including an upper chamber with a beautiful wall painting. They uncovered the Angel Gabriel making his famous announcement, but sadly we don't have Mary. Just standing in that room was like travelling back in time. I have my notebook out and a whole scene for my novel is unfolding.
An inspirational setting. If you're in UK, and Dorset in particular I recommend a visit to Fiddleford Manor.
I had so many details and plot lines in my head to get down. The computer behaved, but sadly I didn't! I allowed myself to get distracted by a tiny bit of double checking research! I simply had to check the dates of an outbreak of the infamous sweating sickness and the lure of internet links swallowed up a whole hour!
But, that aside, I managed to add quite a bit. I also rewrote one chapter and feel much happier about it.
It's much harder to write about ordinary lives in an exciting and page turning style, but I hope I'm making progress. Focus on the things that resonate with today's reader is my mantra. Hopefully it's working.
Then I went out to the supermarket and had an idea for a short story based on ancient Roman figures - not sure how that happened!
So today I'll go out for a walk and to get some more inspiration for Legacy, but I won't count on it!!Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-83498323498935011592016-03-11T01:26:00.001-08:002016-03-11T01:26:30.747-08:00Jane Grenfell strugglingauthor Blog: Legacy - progress reportJane Grenfell strugglingauthor Blog: Legacy - progress report: Well, as planned, I sat down to write a few more chapters for Legacy. Writing a sequel is hard! Ensuring consistency with volume 1 of the trilogy takes longer than I thought it would. By the way a huge thank you from me to all of you who have downloaded Loyalty from Amazon. I appreciate your support and interest.
As I say I did sit down and typed up several thousand words only for my computer to crash. I lost the whole morning's work. #sadface does not do justice to how I felt.
But rather than rail against fate I decided it was the editing fairy or Calliope herself taking a hand. So I started again and actually feel that although I wrote less, it was better.
As I approach this weekend I have two data sticks, a virus checked hard drive and a cloud storage area all ready to receive the fruits of my labours.Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-61816391648525259912016-03-05T00:36:00.001-08:002016-03-05T00:36:23.046-08:00Jane Grenfell strugglingauthor Blog: Get writing!Jane Grenfell strugglingauthor Blog: Get writing!: Promised myself that this Mother's Day weekend I will concentrate on getting Legacy closer to being finished. Need to get about 50,000 words so I thought let's go for 10,000 over two days. I'll report back!

I want to publish in April, a year after book 1, Loyalty came out.

But, as for many fellow struggling authors I get easily distracted. Usually by a series of other ideas for stories.

Even that triggers ideas for a story about an ambitious author who can't ever complete a project.....
Too tired to tackle my complicated historical texts. So, I found a competition to enter. A short story by a British writer for the Irish Post. It's part of Listowel writers week. 1000 word limit on an Irish theme.
That was a challenge. What is an Irish theme?
Anyway I produced a short piece I was very happy with and with a click if the mouse it was gone!
So, let's see what they think.
After the deadline I'll publish it here, so you can comment..Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-84518960790987974452016-02-05T23:12:00.000-08:002016-02-05T23:13:07.566-08:00Putting my time to good use?Just decided to enter the Reader's Digest 100 word story competition, as suggested by my wonderful Dad. His blog.
100 words is not a lot, and it had to be precisely 100, not 99 and not 101. Submitted a piece called Retribution. Successful entries for public voting (how scary is that!) go on their website 6 March.Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-28738496066444296932016-02-04T20:25:00.001-08:002016-02-04T20:25:25.432-08:00Another sleepless nightOh well, if I cant sleep I might as well think about my writing. I was trying not to use the computer, trying to let the brain chill and hopefully fall asleep, but I couldn't resist!

I've been working on my sci-fi novella, and finally found a name for my alien protagonist. Imagination defeated I turned to the internet. I looked up some ancient names and found one that fitted the pronunciation patterns I had decided upon for my alien language. When I looked to see what the name had been associated with I found that it was the goddess of a moon of Venus and/or Venus - and my story references that planet. Co-incidence? Did I already know that? I don't care - its a great name and I'm really happy!

I have also been trying to progress Maryland - my novel about the transportation of female convicts to the American colonies in the 1730s.
I have pivotal violent scene in the early part of the book and keep going back to it. It's the first time I've written such a sexually violent section and I am almost literally sweating blood over it. Am I over-sensitive? I don't want it to be trite or hackneyed. I want it to be respectful of the victim - after all the writer does not know their reader, they may be a victim. I want it to be accurate but not overly-disturbing. Its probably the hardest thing I've ever written. I'll let you know how I get on.Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-50941968514604646962016-01-30T04:20:00.000-08:002016-02-04T20:04:24.280-08:00Work in progressWell, I've been working on several pieces at once! Not to be recommended as it's easy to get confused!
Last night I finished off two short pieces - both less than 2000 words - and took the plunge by sending them in for a competition. Although the judges don't give feedback it will be interesting to see if they get placed in the commended group.

So that leaves me with books two and three of my King,God and Country trilogy (Loyalty being book 1) partially written; a historical novel set in the 1730s; a science fiction novella of 17000 or so words, a short speculative fiction story and a bubbling idea about my home town of Bridgwater.

2016 seems to be my year of inspiration. Hope it keeps up!

I think I might also get Loyalty out in paper copy. I won't get any royalties for it given the pricing but I'd like those people who don't do ebooks to be able to get a copy.

If you have read Loyalty, please give it a review on Amazon, or tweet about it #strugglingauthor #commutereadJane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-5477979803686709632016-01-05T18:55:00.002-08:002016-01-05T18:55:19.263-08:00Insomnia strikesWell, its 2.50 am. I cant sleep. It's a pain because I have to go to work in a few hours. Thought through a few more angles on the sci-fi story - got two titles to choose from. Progeny or Mergers and Acquisitions. I'm favouring the latter.
Also going to work up a short children's fantasy piece and a short i started as part of an on-line fiction writing course.

Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4666417118164143056.post-55003479044731022272015-12-20T22:23:00.000-08:002015-12-20T22:23:39.410-08:00Getting back on trackWell it's been quite a week or so. 10 days ago I suddenly lost the sight in my left eye. Just like that. Lights out.
Thanks to quick and thorough medical care by the fanatastic British NHS I've been treated and am awaiting a biopsy this morning. So it's put rather a brake on my writing as I can't see type.
But when the Muse strikes you can't hold her back and when in my hospital bed I managed to find an old notebook and scrawl a sci-fy story. So, subject to today's surgery going well, I'm going to knock it into shape and publish in the next month or two. I'll keep you updated!
Oh, I now I have a phone with a decent recording app, can't let that Muse go unanswered!Jane Grenfellhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11918022308815049908noreply@blogger.com0
